Purplevine IP Group ("Purplevine") assisted TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. ("CSOT"), one of the world's leading semiconductor display companies based in China, to reach a patent licensing agreement with Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. ("SEL"), a Japan-based company focusing on research and IP. The agreement covers certain patents in crystalline oxide semiconductor technology, bringing an end to their patent litigations and disputes pending in several countries since 2021. Purplevine played a crucial role throughout the patent licensing negotiation, providing professional services to facilitate the successful collaboration between CSOT and SEL. This serves as a remarkable example of how Purplevine assists clients in resolving complex IP issues by promoting commercial cooperation between two rivals in lieu of a long-lasting zero-sum game.

Founded in 1980, SEL has been devoted to pioneering research and development in semiconductor technology, making it a globally influential holder of semiconductor technology and patents. In 2021, SEL initiated patent infringement lawsuits against CSOT and its clients in Japan, the United States, and Germany. With professional support from Purplevine, CSOT proactively responded with counterclaims, invalidation of patents, and other legal measures. At the same time, Purplevine assisted CSOT in carrying out patent licensing negotiations with SEL, aiming to find the best reasonable resolution for their disputes.

Mr. Victor Yang, Chairman and CEO of Purplevine, commented, "CSOT is one of the leading players in China's semiconductor display industry, while SEL has accumulated rich technological achievements and intellectual property in semiconductor display and oxide semiconductor fields throughout years of independent research and development. We are delighted to facilitate strategic cooperation between these two companies. This settlement holds significant importance in the context of China's current semiconductor industry development. It represents a pivotal case in the Chinese semiconductor display industry in resolving major international patent risks and serves as a valuable example for other Chinese companies when facing intellectual property risks during their international expansion. Moreover, it demonstrates the Chinese semiconductor industry's commitment to enhancing its competitiveness through active participation in international technological cooperation."

CSOT's legal team expressed great satisfaction with the resolution. Mr. Junya Liao, CSOT's Legal Director, stated, "Thanks to the professional services provided by Purplevine, CSOT is well-positioned to strengthen its technological and intellectual property in the penal display field. Through CSOT's independent research and development and collaborations with international partners such as SEL, CSOT will enhance its advancement in this technical field. The patent license agreement with SEL is a testament to mutual respect and recognition of each other's intellectual property. This fruitful collaboration has resulted in a 'win-win' outcome for both parties."
